Alapala, one of our members, has introduced Similago III, its next-generation roller mill that combines energy efficiency, digitalization, and sustainability for the milling industry. Developed entirely by Alapala’s in-house R&D and engineering teams, the new platform stands out with innovative technologies designed to reduce energy consumption by up to 20% compared to conventional roller mills.

 

Similago III features a high-efficiency permanent magnet synchronous reluctance direct-drive system, eliminating mechanical transmission components such as belts, pulleys, and gearboxes. This not only enables a more compact machine footprint but also significantly reduces maintenance requirements by eliminating routine tasks such as belt replacement and pulley alignment, helping mills lower both maintenance costs and downtime.

 

One of the machine’s most notable innovations is its intelligent motor-generator operating principle. Unlike conventional systems, where both grinding rolls continuously consume electrical power, Similago III allows the secondary roll to operate either as a motor or as a generator, depending on process conditions. The recovered kinetic energy is reused to regulate roll speed, enabling energy savings of up to 20%.

 

The new roller mill also offers independent speed control for both grinding rolls, allowing millers to optimize the differential roll speed according to raw material characteristics and the desired flour quality. This provides greater process flexibility and enhanced control over milling performance.

 

The industrial design of Similago III was developed in collaboration with the Italian design and engineering company Italdesign. The machine incorporates an RFID-based authorization system that restricts access to machine parameters to authorized personnel only. All parameter changes are recorded and time-stamped to ensure full traceability. In addition, a pneumatic locking mechanism integrated into the adjustment system physically locks grinding settings once they have been established, preventing unintended operator intervention during production.
